Basic characteristics
High machining accuracy requirements: A mold is generally composed of a concave mold, a convex mold, and a mold base, and some may also be a multi piece assembly module. So the combination of upper and lower molds, the combination of inlay blocks and cavities, and the assembly between modules all require high machining accuracy. The dimensional accuracy of precision molds often reaches μ M-level.
Complex surface shape: Some products, such as automotive panels, aircraft parts, toys, and household appliances, have a surface shape composed of multiple curved surfaces. Therefore, the mold cavity surface is very complex. Some surfaces must be processed using mathematical calculation methods.
Small batch size: The production of molds is not in large batches, and in many cases, only one batch is produced.

Multiple processes: In mold processing, various processes such as milling, boring, drilling, reaming, and threading are always used.


The use of repetitive production molds has a lifespan: when a set of molds exceeds its lifespan, a new mold needs to be replaced, so the production of molds often has repeatability.
In the production of profiling processing molds, sometimes there are no drawings or data, and profiling processing needs to be carried out based on the actual object. This requires high imitation accuracy and no deformation.
The mold materials are excellent and the main materials for high hardness molds are mostly made of high-quality alloy steel, especially for long-life molds, which are often made of martensitic steel such as Crl2 and CrWMn.
Based on the many characteristics mentioned above, when selecting a machine tool, it is necessary to meet the processing requirements as much as possible, such as strong functionality of the CNC system, high precision of the machine tool, good rigidity, good thermal stability, and the ability to imitate shapes.
